Overview

The Work-Study Certificate Programme for the Energy & Chemicals sector is a 12-month work-study programme leading to the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Chemical Technology). It provides participants with relevant knowledge and skills in process engineering, occupational safety and health, environmental technology, productivity and quality management to support the continued growth of the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. 

Upon completing the 2 skills-based Modular Certificates (MC) under the programme, participants will be able to understand and apply the process engineering principles and knowledge relevant to the operational requirements in the chemical and chemical-related industries.

The job role offered under this programme is a Junior Process Technician (Trainee)[1].

Upon successful completion of programme, graduates may take on the role of a Junior Process Technician[1]. They may also look forward to wage increment and role expansion in their workplace, subject to their work performance.

Upon successful completion of the part-time diploma course, graduates may look forward to taking up the role of a Process Technician[1]

Course Structure

Participants are required to complete a total of 2 skills-based Modular Certificates (MCs). Each MC can be completed in 1 semester, i.e. 6 months. A certificate will be issued once the requirements for each MC are met. Participants must complete these 2 MCs within 12 months.

1. Modular Certificate in Chemical Plant Unit Operations
a) Chemical Engineering Principles
b) Basic Unit Operations
c) Separation Processes

2. Modular Certificate in Chemical Processes
a) Process Instrumentation
b) Specialty Chemicals
c) Petrochemicals

Upon completing the 2 MCs under this Work-Study Certificate programme, participants have the option to complete the remaining 3 MCs to obtain the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Chemical Technology):

3. Modular Certificate in Chemical Plant Safety and Health
a) Occupational Safety
b) Occupational Health
c) Process Safety and Loss Prevention

4. Modular Certificate in Environmental and Waste Management
a) Water Treatment Technology
b) Air Pollution
c) Solid and Hazardous Waste

5. Modular Certificate in Chemical Plant Optimisation
a) Chemical Plant Operations Management
b) Chemical PLant Productivity Improvement
c) Chemical Plant Quality Improvement


Modes of Assessment

The assessment framework will include a range of coursework components such as laboratory, tutorial and project assignments, class participation, tests, quizzes and examination.


Entry Requirements

Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents who are within three years of either graduation from the ITE or the Operationally Ready Date (ORD) for National Servicemen from the following full-time programmes are eligible to apply.

- NITEC in Chemical Process Technology
- NITEC in Applied Food Science
- Higher NITEC in Chemical Technology
- Higher NITEC in Biotechnology
- Other relevant chemical-related Higher NITEC / NITEC programmes

For NITEC graduates, there is a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0.
For Higher NITEC graduates, there is no GPA requirement.


Course Fees

Full Course Fees for WSCert (excluding GST)*: $7,524.00

MOE subsidy will not be applicable for students who repeat a module or semester.
Fees payable is based on per MC.
The course fees will be reviewed by MOE on an annual basis and adjusted accordingly.
