India is home to the third largest tech startup ecosystem globally, after the US and China. As of 2018, India is home to 18 unicorns, with eight of them achieving unicorn status in 2018 and each boasting an average valuation of US$2.4 billion (S$3.3billion) per unicorn. India has a GDP of US$2.60 trillion (S$3.57 trillion) and a population of 1.6 billion – the second largest population in the world. As incomes rise and the middle class swells, Singapore-based companies can expect more opportunities for growth and expansion in India.
Bangalore is recognised as the technology and startup hub of India. There are over 100 technology MNCs based there, including Microsoft and Google. In 2019, Bangalore was ranked 18th in Startup Genome’s Global Startup Ecosystem Report. The ecosystem is worth US$24 billion (S$33 billion) and 25% of Indian technology startups are based in Bangalore.
Bangalore continues to attract entrepreneurs and investors, thanks to its already high concentration of established higher learning institutes and dedicated special economic zones in information technology (IT), biotechnology, aerospace and aviation.
