Report by EnterpriseSG and Foodvalley NL identifies developments and opportunities for growth of the insect industry in Singapore and Europe

MR No.: 063/22

Insects are set to play an important role in the global food industry as the need to source for alternative, sustainable sources of protein to feed 10 billion people by 2050, becomes more pressing than ever. Insect protein production is one of the most efficient and carbon-effective protein production systems given its circular approach and vertical farming systems. By 2050, it is anticipated that insects could provide 15% of the additional protein that will be needed.

Against this backdrop, Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG) and Foodvalley Netherlands (Foodvalley NL) have jointly developed the Insect Industry Innovation Scan: Europe and Singapore, which was released today. This sheds light on the opportunities and challenges of Singapore’s and Europe’s growing insect industry. The report also serves as a resource guide for current and aspiring insect industry players across the value chain, as well as investors to understand the developments of the insect industry in Singapore and Europe.
